Muscat's Wonder Rug
The "Carpet of Wonder" stands as an emblematic area rug meticulously crafted for the prayer hall of the Grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Muscat, Oman. Measuring an astounding 60.90m by 70.50m, it encompasses approximately 4,343 square meters (or roughly 14,248 square feet). Until 2007, it held the record as the world's largest carpet until surpassed by The Largest Rug In The World in Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque, Abu Dhabi.
Suspended above the Carpet of Wonder in the prayer hall, the second largest chandelier in the world illuminates its intricate patterns. This magnificent rug boasts approximately 211 knots per square inch, with an estimated total of 1.7 billion rug knots securing its vast expanse.
Crafting such a masterpiece required the expertise of the Iran Carpet Company, involving hundreds of skilled artisans and Persian rug weavers over four years of meticulous labor.
Commissioned by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Carpet of Wonder reflects his commitment to artistic excellence and legacy. It was woven in Nishabour, Iran, following careful planning to mirror the mosque's design and intricacies.
Inspired by the Persian Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan, the carpet's design showcases a sacred round medallion with radiating lobes, symbolizing a profound optical illusion of depth and symmetry.
The project demanded approximately 12 million man-hours of dedication from the weavers, resulting in a seamless masterpiece weighing 22 tons. Despite misconceptions, the carpet was woven as a single piece, culminating in its awe-inspiring title, "The Carpet of Wonder."
