This striking carpet is made form Abadeh that lies between Shiraz and Isfahan in Iran. There is a central motif with similar motifs also appearing in the red coloured field that contains many other interesting motifs. There is no doubt as to its magnificence. What cannot escape detection is the presence of the colour red here, in its various hues and shades. In Persia, red was most frequently crafted from madder root, which was known for its rich red-carpet dye. There were many other natural sources of red for craftsmen to choose from including insects and flowers, snails and beetles, flowers and weeds were used to dye wool from goats and sheep. The end result were striking shades of red that filled people with joy and courage. Wool was used in the construction of this carpet.
