Persian Qum Silk
Stock No. ME-100-000845
Size(m): 3.02×1.93
This is an extraordinarily beautiful rug handmade from the city of Qom. It is made of pure silk. It is 3.02 meters by 1.93 meters. The extraordinary appealing aspect of this rug is the sense of harmony and balance that is obtained by the combination of colors. The rosette-shaped central medallion with its two drops, top and bottom, are precisely the same colors as appear in the guard border and the spandrels of the carpet. This provides a sense of unity and balance.
The colors just mentioned are variations of soft hues of yellow, gold, and rust brown. They appear to be in complete harmony with each other and the subtler colors highlight the strength of the dark rustic brown color, which is a solid color forming the outer guard border.
The base color of the main field of the carpet is a beautiful, almost aqua blue, and of course blue, yellow, and gold's contrast and blend in so well together, reminding us of the sun and the ocean and the sun and sand. The carpet is one that is very restful and balanced. There is a great sense of harmony and beauty about it.
The depictions in the guard border, and indeed in the field and elsewhere, are often of flowers and vines. This is very propitious. It indicates spring. There's a birth of life and a sense of abundance. The blues contained by way of base color in the field is reminiscent, of course, of water and the sky, and if it is water that we imagine then of course all life came from the sea.
In Persian carpet motifs and symbolism, the color blue holds significant cultural and aesthetic importance. Blue is often associated with several symbolic meanings:
- Spirituality and Divinity:Blue is commonly linked to the divine and spiritual realms. It represents transcendence, depth, and the infinite, conveying a sense of connection to higher powers or cosmic forces.
- 2. Heaven and Sky:The color blue is frequently used to depict the sky, conveying a sense of vastness and openness. It symbolizes the heavens and the infinite space above, contributing to a spiritual and celestial aesthetic.
- 3. Protection and Warding Off Evil:In some Persian carpets, particularly those with tribal or nomadic influences, blue is believed to have protective qualities. It is thought to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.
- 4. Depiction of Water:Blue is also associated with water, rivers, and lakes. Carpets featuring blue hues may evoke a sense of life, fertility, and the vital role of water in sustaining existence.
- 5. Symbol of Royalty and Luxury: Certain shades of blue, especially deep blues and indigos, have historically been associated with luxury and regality. Blue pigments were often expensive and challenging to produce, making them a symbol of wealth and prestige.
Ultimately, the significance of blue in Persian carpets consistently conveys a rich tapestry of meanings tied to spirituality, nature, and cultural symbolism. And the central rosette-shaped medallion could easily represent the life and the power of this very sun itself.
