Persian Tabriz Kourk
Stock No. SY-141-000921
Size(m): 2.01×1.50
This is a magnificent handmade rug from the city of Tabriz made from Kourk wool. It measures 2.01 by 1.50 meters.
Its is defined by the single rosette motif at its center with two drops north and south.
The rosette pattern, with its origins in the natural world, symbolizes the petals of a rose radiating from a central point and has been a significant motif across various cultures and epochs.
Historically, this design was employed extensively in sculptural objects from antiquity, appearing notably in Mesopotamia and Ancient Greece. It is often associated with the goddess Ishtar, symbolizing fertility and the divine, and has found its way into Romanesque and Renaissance architecture as well as the art of Central Asia, indicating its widespread appeal and symbolic resonance.
In the context of Persian carpets, motifs like the rosette carry deep cultural and spiritual significance, embodying centuries of artistic tradition and craftsmanship. Persian carpets themselves have a storied history, dating back to over 2,500 years ago, reflecting the cultural growth of one of the world's most profound civilizations.
These carpets, beyond their aesthetic appeal, were seen as symbols of wealth, prestige, and distinction, especially among kings and noblemen.
The intricate design of the rosette in a carpet, especially when it stands as a single motif surrounded by a field of floral motifs connected with vines and which also includes the Mahi pattern, suggests not just an appreciation for beauty but a reverence for the interconnectedness of life, as echoed in nature.
The design's evolution and adaptation through time underline its enduring significance, offering not only a visual feast but also a link to the spiritual and cultural heritage that shapes our understanding of art and history.
This rich tapestry of historical and cultural narratives embedded within the rosette pattern emphasizes its importance beyond mere decoration.
In a Persian carpet, every knot, color, and motif tells a story, weaving together threads of human civilization, belief systems, and the natural world.
The colors of this carpet are very subtle and beautiful. As mentioned earlier, the central medallion is very much like a flower that's opening out.
Throughout this carpet there are depictions of flowers, on vines for instance, in the main field of the carpet, and most beautiful soft gentle colors including flowers motifs on each of the four spandrels. The guard border is magnificent and contains a base red color in the main guard border and softer parallel guard borders on either side.
The carpet is magnificent and will look sensational in any setting.
