This is an extraordinarily beautiful coombsilk carpet. It measures 1.54 m by 1 m. It is made according to a master designer, and it has massive symbolism. The central motif is a rosette shape with concentric bands expanding out from what is the central flower. There is a sense of movement by way of fluidity and order. That sense of order is further encapsulated by the design of the main garden border, which are strips of horizontal bands that change colour one strip after the next. Starting off at the perimeter, the strips are blue, then they are a form of crimson reddish colour, then they go blue, then they go red, then they go blue. At the very centre there is a blue strip. Along that blue strip are, on either side of the rosette, drops which are also of a most beautiful yellow hue colour, which is the colour of the outer rosette band. That very same colour appears in the spandrels of the carpet design. It is also the colour that is base colour where the signature of the master designer appears on this carpet.
The outer garden border is a solid blue colour which provides tremendous power to framing this carpet. The carpet itself is reminiscent of the very most beautiful thoughts one might have with respect to creation itself, whether it is a flower which is the recreation of the day, or by way of spring, or the sun itself, because the rosette does look very much as if it were a depiction of the sun. There are flowers and motifs throughout the carpet and these suggest that we are at a time of growth and expansion.
A carpet like this is not one that is bleak. It is one that captures enormous optimism and magnificence and beauty. The yellow in the spandrel areas is a wonderful contrast and complement to blue. So often we do think of blue skies and yellow sands and that association is natural to our mind's eye.
