Hamedan (Hamadan) Persian rugs come from western Iran and are among the most widely produced traditional village rugs in the country, known for their durability, bold character, and wide variety of geometric and floral designs. Woven across hundreds of surrounding villages rather than centralised workshops, they typically feature wool piles on cotton foundations and are made using sturdy, practical weaving techniques that reflect everyday rural use. Common patterns include medallions, repeating Herati motifs, and Mina Khani lattice designs, often rendered in strong indigo blues, deep reds, rust tones, and ivory backgrounds using both natural and synthetic dyes. Unlike more refined city rugs such as Tabriz or Kashan, Hamedan rugs are less rigid in design, often showing slight variations and asymmetry that add to their authentic village charm. They are highly valued for their resilience, making them ideal for high-traffic areas, while still offering rich visual appeal and excellent value compared to finer, more formal Persian carpets.
