Persian Qum Silk
Stock No. BR-100-001352
Size(m): 1.46×1.00
This is a handmade carpet from the city of Qom in Iran. It is made of silk. The extraordinary thing about this carpet is the vibrancy of its colours. It is a central medallion carpet which has a combination of blues, yellows, and reds.
The blue colour that forms the base colour of the field is so spectacularly alive, and because it has an aquamarine aspect to it, one almost senses that the flowers are floating on water. This aspect of the intensity of the blue colour and its shimmering effect in the silk carpets from Qum, are attributes of the silk that have been noted by researchers and connoisseurs of silk carpets. It is said that the Qum region is particularly fortunate because of its water composition. When the natural silk is washed, the composition of the water provides the silk with this vibrant, shimmering colour aspect, which we can see here.
The themes of the carpet itself are ones of tremendous optimism in that the colour blue indicates a serene aspect and loyalty, whilst the yellow colour present is one often associated with a sense of new beginnings, a dawn, and the power of the sun itself.
A carpet like this is not one that is bleak. It is one that captures magnificence and beauty. The yellow in the spandrel areas is a wonderful contrast and complement to blue.
So often we do think of blue skies and yellow sands and that association is natural to our mind's eye. What is interesting also is in each of the corner spandrels there is a red flower which is very much larger than the other flowers in this carpet. The impact of this carpet is massive given these considerations and the carpet itself would provide a magnificent focal point in any setting.
Whilst it is not a particularly large carpet, being 1.46m by 1m, its vibrancy and the powerful use of design and colour combination means that it would be certainly a focal or accent point in any interior design scheme, and used intelligently it could make a magnificent addition to a most luxurious room.
