Karz oriental rugs are woven in the city of Kars. Most of the rugs woven in and around Kars use designs similar to the Caucasian weaving centre of Kazak, Karabagh and Kuba. feature distinct design patterns/motifs with geometric composition and tribal characteristics. Common patterns include medallions, rosettes, hooked polygons, diamonds and crosses as well as representations of animals, birds, trees and humans. Their geometric designs are actually symbols that combine in myriad ways to profound effect. Stars of Wisdom, Wheels of Life, Ram’s Horn, Running Water and many other symbols appear in these rugs. In general, the colours of Kars rugs are softer and more pastel-like than other Caucasian rugs. Reds tend to be a burgundy colour rather than brick red as in Kazaks.
